By Khalid Idris Doya

Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic (ATAPoly), Bauchi, has matriculated 2,258 newly admitted students into its Higher National Diploma (HND), National Diploma (ND), and Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) programmes for the 2025/2026 academic session.

Speaking at the matriculation ceremony held on Thursday at the institution's new 500-seater lecture hall, the Rector, Dr. Hashim Sabo Bello, reiterated the Polytechnic's zero-tolerance stance on anti-social behaviour.

He warned that acts such as cultism, examination malpractice, sexual harassment, drug abuse, indecent dressing, vandalism, and truancy are strictly prohibited and would attract severe sanctions.

"Our responsibility is not only to impart knowledge but also to mold your character to become responsible and dependable citizens. Any student who refuses to comply with the institution's rules will be shown the way out," he said.

A breakdown of the newly admitted students shows that 801 are HND students, 1,413 are ND students, while 44 are enrolled in NCE programmes.

Dr. Bello urged the students to take their matriculation oath seriously, noting that it signifies their commitment to abide by the Polytechnic's rules and conduct themselves responsibly throughout their academic stay.

He described matriculation as a vital requirement that formally admits students into the academic community, congratulating them on securing admission despite stiff competition.

"You must justify this rare privilege by remaining focused and disciplined in your academic pursuit," he added.

The Rector also commended the Bauchi State Government under Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed for its continued support to the institution, including infrastructural development, land acquisition for expansion, and funding for accreditation of programmes.

He further appreciated the Federal Government's Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) initiative introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that it has eased financial challenges for students, particularly those from less privileged backgrounds.

Dr. Bello urged students to safeguard institutional facilities, stressing that the government at both state and federal levels has invested heavily in creating a conducive learning environment.

"You are custodians of these facilities. Use them responsibly so that future students can also benefit," he advised.

In a related development, the Dean of the School of Liberal Studies, Malam Faruk Aliyu, called on newly admitted students to remain dedicated and focused on their studies.

Speaking during the school's orientation exercise, he emphasised the importance of discipline, noting that the institution awards both academic knowledge and character.

The orientation programme featured guidance sessions by various units of the Polytechnic, including the registry, bursary, library, and examinations office, aimed at equipping students with essential knowledge for a successful academic journey.

Also speaking, the head of department of Crime Management and Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Malam Musa Yakubu, appreciated guests for their attendance and support.
