Dolphin Maria clinches 11th NILDS national quiz title in Bauchi

By Nasir Shuaibu

Dolphin Maria International School, Bauchi, has emerged winner of the 2026 11th edition of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) National Quiz Competition for Senior Secondary Schools on Legislation and Democracy.

Dolphin Maria secured the top position after edging Government Girls Arabic College (GGAC), Alkaleri, in a keenly contested final that ended in a tie before a decisive re-run.

Both schools had initially scored 35 points each, forcing the organisers to order a re-run to determine the winner. Dolphin Maria eventually pulled ahead with 45 points against GGAC Alkaleri's 40 points.

Government Girls Arabic College, Alkaleri, finished second, while Government Day Secondary School, Dagu, in Warji Local Government Area, placed third with 30 points.

The competition featured six secondary schools from across Bauchi State and was organised in collaboration with the Bauchi State Ministry of Education and NILDS to deepen students' knowledge of legislation, democracy and governance.

Speaking at the event in Bauchi on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Education, Abdulkadir Ibrahim, said civic education was essential to preparing young Nigerians for responsible participation in democratic governance.

The commissioner, represented by the Director of Quality Assurance, Hassan Sulaiman, urged the students to remain focused and regard the competition as an opportunity to broaden their knowledge.

He said the knowledge gained from the exercise was more important than winning or losing, urging the participants to answer questions carefully and represent their schools effectively.

The Director-General of NILDS, represented by Engr. Adamu Yahaya Abdulhamid, said the competition had entered its 11th year and was designed to promote awareness of the legislature, democracy and governance among secondary school students.

He said civic education could help address political apathy, misinformation and intolerance by equipping young people with relevant knowledge and critical-thinking skills.

The winners received cash prizes of N70,000, N50,000 and N20,000 for the first, second and third positions respectively.

Some participants, including Ali Muhammad Ali Abubakar, Aishatu Aliyu and Misbada, advised other students to make reading a habit by using their free time to study.

They also thanked their Government teacher for encouraging and preparing them for the competition.
