SAZU Reassures Public on Campus Security After Student Attack

The management of Sa’adu Zungur University has reassured students, parents, and the general public of the safety of its campuses following an attack on one of its students, identified as Maryam Yakeem.

Yakeem, a 200-level student of Biology Education, was reportedly attacked by suspected phone snatchers in an incident that occurred outside the university premises. The institution clarified that contrary to reports circulating on some online platforms, the attack did not take place within any of its campuses.

In a statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Auwal Hassan, the management described reports suggesting the incident occurred on campus as false and misleading.

The Vice-Chancellor, Fatimah Tahir, reiterated the institution’s commitment to maintaining a secure learning environment across its campuses. She noted that the university has continued to work closely with security agencies and internal structures to ensure the safety of students and staff.

According to the statement, the university has recorded no cases of insecurity within its campuses, attributing this to proactive measures and sustained collaboration with relevant authorities. It also recalled a recent visit by the Vice-Chancellor to the state Commissioner of Police aimed at strengthening security support for the university community.

The management expressed concern over what it described as unprofessional conduct by some online media outlets accused of spreading unverified information capable of inciting panic among the public.

Meanwhile, the university disclosed that its Chief Security Officer and the Dean of Students’ Affairs promptly visited the injured student at the hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment. Her condition, according to the management, is stable.

The Vice-Chancellor extended sympathy to the victim on behalf of the university and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the lives and property of students.

The management called for calm among stakeholders, assuring that necessary steps are being taken to enhance safety both within and outside the university environment.
