Members of the Islamic movement in Nigeria in Bauchi, have voluntarily donated nearly 100 pints of blood in honour of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (S), who sacrificed his life in Karbala over 1,300 years ago in defence of justice and the principles of Islam.

The blood donation exercise was conducted by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), also known as Doctors Without Borders, and is expected to support healthcare services, particularly for pregnant women, children and patients requiring emergency medical care.

Speaking during the blood donation exercise held at the Ashura Majlis venue in Bauchi on Wednesday, Malam Abdulkadir Adamu Galandi of the Islamic movement's Medical Care Initiative (ISMA) said the programme was organised to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions in Karbala, Iraq in 61 AH.

He noted that Imam Hussain's sacrifice continues to inspire millions of people across the world to uphold the values of justice, compassion and service to humanity.

"As part of our annual activities during this period of remembrance, we organise blood donation campaigns to honour the values for which Imam Hussain (AS) stood," Galandi said.

According to him, the donated blood will help save lives and provide critical support to those in need, especially pregnant women, children and patients facing medical emergencies.

"Under the leadership of Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, we mobilised members of our community, including the youth wing and our partners in the health sector. We are grateful for the support and collaboration of the medical teams and all stakeholders who contributed to the success of this exercise," he added.

Galandi disclosed that approximately 90 pints of blood were successfully collected during the one-day exercise.

"We trust that these donations will strengthen healthcare services and provide life-saving assistance to those who need it most. This is our contribution in the spirit of remembrance and service to humanity," he said.

Also speaking, Yau Umar of Dandalin Matasa, the youth wing of the Islamic movement which coordinated the exercise, said the blood donation campaign has become an annual event during Ashura commemorations.

"We have been conducting this exercise for years to support people in need of blood and to contribute to emergency healthcare services," Umar said.

He underscored the importance of maintaining functional blood banks and urged healthy and eligible individuals to cultivate the habit of regular voluntary blood donation.

"Blood donation is about saving lives. We encourage everyone who is healthy and eligible to embrace the spirit of voluntary donation and help those in need," he said.
