The chairperson of the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC), Hajiya Jummai Salamatu Abubakar, has said that the commission's study tour to Jigawa State was aimed at strengthening its preparedness for the conduct of a credible and hitch-free local government election in Bauchi State.
BASIEC had earlier announced August 17, 2026, as the date for local government council elections across the state's 20 local government areas.
Speaking during the visit, Hajiya Jummai said the visit formed part of BASIEC's efforts to strengthen institutional capacity, foster collaboration among state electoral commissions and improve electoral administration through the exchange of experiences and best practices.
She thanked the executive chairman of the Jigawa State Independent Electoral Commission, Alhaji Awalu Hardo, for the warm reception and hospitality extended to the delegation.
A statement issued on Wednesday by BASIEC's information officer, Hajiya Fatima Idris Danjuma, said the delegation comprised the commission's principal officers, including the chairperson, seven permanent commissioners, the secretary to the commission and other key staff members.
Jummai added that, "The purpose of this study tour is to further strengthen our relationship with your commission, share experiences and learn from your wealth of knowledge and best practices in electoral management.
"We are particularly interested in understanding the strategies and innovations that have contributed to your successes, with a view to adapting them to improve our own processes in Bauchi State," she noted.
She stated that BASIEC was inaugurated on September 13, 2000, pursuant to Section 197 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and has since remained committed to conducting credible, free and fair local government elections in line with its constitutional mandate.
The BASIEC chairperson appealed for the support and cooperation of the host commission to ensure the delegation derives maximum benefit from the exercise.
"As we engage with you during this tour, we humbly seek your cooperation, guidance and support in ensuring that we derive maximum benefit from this exercise. We are confident that the interactions and exchanges will be mutually beneficial and will further strengthen the bond between our commissions," she added.
Jummai assured that the knowledge and experience gained from the visit would be effectively utilised to enhance service delivery and strengthen electoral processes in Bauchi State.
She reiterated BASIEC's commitment to conducting credible elections and promoting democratic governance in the state, expressing optimism that the study tour would further enhance institutional capacity and deepen collaboration between state electoral commissions across Nigeria.
