The Federation of Women Lawyers in Nigeria (FIDA-Nigeria), Bauchi State Chapter, has distributed sanitary pads to no fewer than 70 pregnant women at the Specialist Hospital, Bauchi.
The gesture aimed to promote maternal hygiene and encourage the uptake of antenatal services, formed part of activities marking the 2026 International Women’s Day (IWD), observed globally on March 08.
The sanitary items were presented to the beneficiaries during an antenatal session at the hospital. Speaking during the exercise, the Chairperson of FIDA in Bauchi State, Mrs. Hauwa Abubakar, said the initiative was aimed at supporting pregnant women to maintain proper hygiene and safeguard their health.
Abubakar explained that the intervention also aligned with the 2026 IWD theme, “Give to Gain,” which encourages actions that empower women and improve their wellbeing. According to her, promoting health awareness among expectant mothers is critical to preventing pregnancy-related complications and reducing maternal mortality.
“The gesture is to encourage women to take proper care of themselves in order to achieve better health outcomes for both mother and child. “We urge pregnant women to adhere strictly to all instructions and medical advice provided by health workers during antenatal visits,” she said.
Abubakar noted that regular antenatal attendance remained key to early detection and management of pregnancy-related challenges.
In her remarks, Mrs. Ummi Maikudi, Staff of the Specialist Hospital commended FIDA for the outreach, describing it as a timely intervention that would support women accessing care at the facility.
She added that the sanitary pads would help promote menstrual and personal hygiene among the beneficiaries, particularly during the postnatal period
