A group of media practitioners under the aegis of Journalists for Public Health and Development Initiative (J4PD) has preached girl child education in Baram Gada community of Bauchi suburb.
The Executive Director of J4PD, Elizabeth Kah, explained that there is need to preach the girl child education and welfare at the rural communities where most of the uneducated girls and out-of-school children are. She said that the group decided to carry out the campaign in commemoration of this year's International Day of the Girl Child.
While addressing girls and teachers at the Baram Gada Primary School, on Tuesday, Kah said there are girls who have the potential to be doctors, lawyers, engineers, teachers and other impacting professions but a large number are being denied access to education.
According to her, harmful traditional practices, gender based violence and child labour have been hindering many girls from reaching their potential. “It is our collective responsibility to ensure that our girls obtain basic education and have rights to learn and lead.”
Also, Mohammed Jibrin, the Chairman of the School Based Management Committee (SBMC), applauded the journalists for a thoughtful selection of the school for the sensitisation, saying that most of the international days are being held at the urban centres.
Jibrin pledged to mobilise and sensitise rural dwellers on girl child education and end harmful traditional practices that serve as cog on the development of the girls.
Saidu Gambo, the Community Leader, commended the group while soliciting for the government interventions critical social issues. Gambo said that as community stakeholders, traditional leaders are encouraging parents to invest in the girls.
