Bauchi Assembly Adopts Six-Month Maternity Leave Policy to Promote Child Nutrition

The Chairman of the House Committee on Food and Nutrition in Bauchi State, Ahmed Maikudi, has highlighted several legislative measures introduced to improve maternal and child nutrition in the state.

Maikudi disclosed this during an advocacy visit by Nutrition International to the Bauchi State House of Assembly.

According to him, the Assembly has adopted a six-month maternity leave policy for working mothers to enable them adequately breastfeed and care for their babies during the early months of life.

He added that the legislature has also approved a law mandating the establishment of crèches in government Ministries, Departments and Agencies to support lactating mothers in balancing work and childcare responsibilities.

The Country Director of Nutrition International, Osita Okonkwo, during the visit called for increased funding and stronger legislative support to address malnutrition and improve maternal and child health outcomes.

Speaker Abubakar Suleiman assured development partners of the Assembly’s readiness to collaborate in advancing nutrition interventions across the state.
