The Inter-Governmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA) has commenced a three-day regional training for journalists on investigative reporting of economic and financial crimes in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau.
Speaking at the opening ceremony,on Monday GIABA Director General, Mr. Edwin W. Harris Jr., emphasized the critical role of the media in promoting transparency and accountability across West Africa.
He commended the government of Guinea-Bissau, particularly the Minister of Social Communication, Mr. Florentino Fernando Dias, and the country’s Financial Intelligence Unit (CENTIF), for their collaboration in hosting the event.
Harris highlighted the growing threats posed by money laundering, terrorist financing, and proliferation financing, fueled by high-level corruption, drug trafficking, terrorism-related activities, and weak regulatory oversight.
He stressed that investigative journalists are “strategic allies” in uncovering illicit financial flows and influencing public opinion to strengthen governance.
“Your investigations help uncover illegal practices, challenge decision-makers, and mobilize citizens in the fight against financial crimes,” Harris stated,
He urged journalists to maximize the training to enhance their skills and reporting accuracy.
He outlined GIABA’s achievements over its 25-year history, including supporting member states in establishing Financial Intelligence Units, promoting beneficial ownership disclosure, and conducting two rounds of mutual evaluations.
He also noted GIABA’s partnerships with global organizations such as the FATF, EU, AfDB, and GIZ.
The training, which aligns with GIABA’s 2023-2027 Strategic Plan and ECOWAS Vision 2050, will equip journalists with modern investigative techniques, build strong media alliances, and create a network of professionals committed to fighting financial crimes.
Harris concluded by urging journalists to be “beacons of light,” stating, “The fight against money laundering and terrorist financing will only be won if light prevails over darkness.”
