Yankari Express commemorates world Spinal Cord Day, assures professionalism in driving

The Bauchi State Yankari Express Corporation has commemorated the 2025 Spinal Cord Injury Day and assured the general public of its drivers maximum professionalism while driving.

Engr. Babaji Yunusa, the General Manager of the corporation made the assurance on Wednesday while commemorating the day with the members of Spinal Cord Injury Association of Nigeria (SCIAN), Bauchi state chapter.

He said that Yankari Express Corporation seized the opportunity of the day to make it a sensitisation gathering to both the passengers and drivers alike.

“When you are talking about spinal cord issues, it involves accidents, mostly auto crashes and that is the reason why we found it important for such sensitisation to be held here being the state owned transport corporation.

“The drivers are the cause of this kind of thing because they are the ones on the wheel, so they have to be very careful on the road at all times.

“They need to avoid over speeding, overloading and reckless driving because these are the things that cause auto crashes,” he said.

Yunusa added that the event was also to show the people the implications of reckless driving, overloading and speeding amongst others.
He however, assured that the drivers of the state owned transport corporation were well grounded and exhibited a high level of professionalism while on the wheel.

According to him, the corporation invited vehicle inspection officers (VIO) to inspect every vehicle loading passengers on a daily basis to see whether the vehicle was in good condition to embark on such a journey.

He added that if the VIO didn't certify a vehicle as fit to travel, the driver would have to go and fix it while the next person takes over the loading of passengers.

“We have professional drivers here and we don't rush or in haste to travel and come back the same day because being in haste is what usually leads to reckless driving and over speeding,” said the GM.

He recounted when one of the spinal cord injury victims was an undergraduate student of University of Maiduguri and wanted to travel to Bauchi but getting to Yankari motor park, there was no vehicle on ground.

“He was told to wait for the vehicle which was on its way but he couldn't exercise the patience to wait.

“Due to the eagerness of human beings, he decided to board another available vehicle around and they had an accident on their way and that was how he became one of the spinal cord injury victims.

“He said if he had known, he would have waited for one year for the Yankari vehicle to come and avoid the accident that led him to become a spinal cord injury victim.

Earlier speaking, Mr Ilya Ismail, Chairman, SCIAN in the state, who could commended the GM for inviting them to the motor park for the commemoration of the day and sensitisation, called on the state government to help them establish a physiotherapy and comprehensive rehabilitation centre.

This, he said, would help to address the unaffordability of their daily physiotherapy exercises.
