Heavily armed bandits have killed a teacher and abducted an unspecified number of people after invading Government Secondary School, Tsafe, Zamfara state.
According to a statement by Amnesty International Nigeria on Sunday, the incident occurred on Saturday night.
“The incident which happened through Saturday night is yet another indication of failure of Nigerian authorities to protect the people,” the statement read.
Frequent attacks and abductions by bandits targeting schools have severely affected operations of schools and access to education across Zamfara state.
Targeting schools is a serious violation of international humanitarian law, and it undermines the right to education.
There have been incidents of kidnappings and killings in the northern part of Nigeria in recent times.
As a result of this, the North East Governors’ Forum (NEGF) met recently to tackle the menace of kidnapping and violence in the sub-region.
The forum, comprises governors from Adamawa, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe states, with the Deputy Governor representing Bauchi State, Mohammed Auwal Jatau, reaffirming its commitment to tackling common issues affecting the subregion.
