Teenage girls across the 20 local government areas of Bauchi State have been trained to fight against gender-based violence through storytelling, radio drama, film production and structured drama.
The girls, through a project of a non-governmental organisation, Zabin Rayuwa (Choice of Life) which focus on addressing child marriage, gender-based violence and other harmful social norms were trained to speak against menace that destroyed the lives of many girls.
Speaking during a quarterly meeting of stakeholders in the state, the Programme Manager of Zabin Rayuwa, Sadisu Yau Ibrahim said that the project being supported by AMPLIFY CHANGE and The Girl Child Value Support Initiative, adding that child marriage is influenced by multiple factors including poverty, social expectations, unequal gender relations, limited opportunities, inadequate access to information and weak community accountability mechanisms.
He said that the initiative was to promote access to information and improve awareness among child protection services, sexual and reproductive health information, gender equality and support mechanisms.
“It is also a platform where girls, survivors, parents and religious and traditional leaders can share experiences and contribute to solutions. It is aimed to mobilise community participation in protecting girls and preventing harmful practices.”
He said further that the girls across the state were selected for fellowship training on: community theatre, acting, storytelling, facilitation, advocacy, community engagement and leadership.
One of the participants, Mrs. Elizabeth George, said that protecting girls child is responsibility of everyone and must be prioritised. She said that girls must given safe space to express what is affecting them.
