The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Bauchi state chapter, Comrade Dauda Shua’ibu, has said that deliberate removal of subsidies on some essential commodities like fuel, electricity and others is a plan to keep the citizens impoverished.
Shua'ibu made this statement at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium during this year's May Day celebration on Wednesday. He said that the day is being celebrated at a critical time when the Nation's economy is unfavorable to the working class and the entire citizens.
He faulted the introduction of harsh economic policies and removal of subsidies on fuel, electricity, fertilizer and other farm inputs. He said that the federal government failed to realize that no developing country would progress without subsidies.
"Even the so-called developed nations do grant subsidies in all the areas we mentioned above. We view the action of the government on removal of subsidies as an effort to impoverish the citizens and turn all of us to slavery and beggars," he said.
According to him, the introduction of the unfriendly economic policies of the government is an effort to satisfy the Western World and their retrogressive agenda against all African countries with huge potentials which they view as threats to their economies.
Also speaking, the Chairman, Trade Union Congress (TUC), Bauchi state chapter, Comrade Sabiu Barau Ningi, has advocated that Nigeria should remain an indivisible entity.
Ningi was voicing out his opposition to the much suggested restructuring of Nigeria or break away of some ethnic groups in the country. He said “the position of workers is that, together the better. We advise that the government maintain the present arrangement of the Federation, Nigeria to remain as a single entity.”
The Organized Labour while commending Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi state for maintaining security of lives and property, expressed appreciation to God for granting the peaceful atmosphere for the citizens to move freely.
The Chairman, who lamented that Nigerians have been subjected to untold hardship following the unfriendly economic policies of the federal government, called for drastic action to mitigate the suffering of the teaming Nigerians.
"Our leaders, you have seen what our people are passing through, there's no light and there are long queues in our filling stations across the nation.
“Something urgent needs to be done to salvage the situation", he said.
