The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bauchi State Council, has called on the Bauchi state government, through the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, to intensify efforts to contain the cholera outbreak currently affecting parts of the state.
The appeal was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the Council's Congress held yesterday at the Council Secretariat.
Recalled that the Bauchi State Ministry of Health and Social Welfare announced that, as of July 31, 2026, the state had recorded 398 suspected cholera cases across 13 local government areas (LGAs), with 16 deaths, representing a four per cent case fatality rate.
The Congress also advised journalists in the state to remain security conscious, maintain professionalism and uphold non-partisanship in the coverage of political activities ahead of the forthcoming general elections.
It further urged members to strictly adhere to the ethics of the journalism profession throughout the electioneering period to ensure safety, neutrality and credibility in their reportage.
The Congress expressed profound appreciation to Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, for remodeling the NUJ State Secretariat, describing it as one of the best-equipped council secretariats in the country.
The communiqué also appealed to the Bauchi State Government to recruit additional staff, including casual workers, into state-owned media organisations to fill vacancies created by the retirement of personnel.
It commended the state government and security agencies for their sustained efforts in safeguarding lives and property across Bauchi State.
In addition, the Congress urged the State Council to establish more NUJ chapels to broaden its membership base and strengthen the Union's presence across media organisations.
As part of preparations for the forthcoming State Council election, the congress constituted a five-member credentials/electoral committee for onward submission to the NUJ National Secretariat for approval, in line with the union's constitution.
