Bauchi Police, Correspondents discuss media-security synergy against misinformation ahead of 2027 elections

By Nasir Shuaibu

The Bauchi State Police Command and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Correspondents' Chapel, have discussed the need for stronger media-security collaboration to promote peaceful political activities and credible public information ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, made this known when he received the newly elected Executive Committee of the NUJ Correspondents' Chapel, Bauchi State Council, during a courtesy visit to his office.

The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between the Police and journalists, particularly in addressing misinformation, promoting political stability and ensuring a peaceful atmosphere before, during and after the forthcoming elections.

CP Aliyu described the engagement as strategic, considering the influence of the media in shaping public discourse and informing citizens on political and security developments.

He urged journalists to prioritise factual and balanced reporting, warning against the spread of fake news and unverified information capable of generating tension during the electioneering period.

The Commissioner also assured journalists of adequate protection, particularly while covering political campaigns, rallies and other election-related activities.

He said the Command would continue to maintain an open-door policy and provide a safe environment for media practitioners to discharge their constitutional responsibilities without intimidation.

CP Aliyu further called for sustained cooperation between the Police and the media, noting that credible information and responsible journalism were important to maintaining peace and public confidence in the electoral process.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Correspondents' Chapel, Comrade Ra'uf Oyewole, said the visit was to formally introduce the newly elected executive members, who emerged from the Chapel election held on October 7, 2026, for a three-year tenure.

Oyewole said the Chapel, which comprises journalists representing various national and international media organisations, was committed to promoting press freedom, professional ethics, accountability and democratic governance.

He explained that the new leadership was interested in strengthening institutional relationships with security agencies and other stakeholders to support peaceful political engagement and development in Bauchi State.

The Chairman also emphasised the importance of cooperation between journalists and the Police in ensuring transparency, accountability and the dissemination of credible information as political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections.

The visit forms part of the new Chapel leadership's engagement with critical institutions in the state.
