Bauchi spends N800m on exam fees for 24,917 students

By Samuel Luka

The Bauchi State Government has spent over N800 million to pay external examination fees for 24,917 students in public schools across the state.

The disclosure was contained in a scorecard presented by the State Ministry of Education on achievements recorded under the administration of Governor Bala Mohammed.

The scorecard presented under the leadership of the Commissioner for Education, Abdulkadir Ibrahim, said the intervention covers fees for the National Examinations Council (NECO), West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) and National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS).

The Ministry said the gesture was aimed at easing the financial burden on parents and guardians and ensuring that examination fees do not hinder students from pursuing their academic aspirations.

Despite prevailing financial challenges, the government said it has continued to invest in education, recognising it as a critical foundation for human capital development and the future prosperity of the state.

The scorecard also highlighted safety-related assessments and interventions in more than ten schools, including Government Girls College, Tafawa Balewa; Government Day Secondary School, Duguri; Government Secondary School, Gamawa; Government Girls Comprehensive College, Liman Katagum; and General Hassan Usman Katsina Unity College, Bauchi, among others.

It added that a Minor Fixes Committee introduced by the Commissioner has carried out repairs in schools including Government Day Secondary School, Kofar Idi, Darazo and Azare; Government Day Technical College, Zango; and Government Secondary School, Dass.
