Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has assented to the law establishing the Mining Institute Alkaleri, Bauchi State (MIABAS), as part of efforts to strengthen mining education, promote technical skills acquisition, curb illegal mining and maximise the economic benefits of the state's solid mineral resources.

The development follows the passage of the bill by the Bauchi State House of Assembly, paving the way for the establishment of a specialised institution dedicated to mining education and technical skills development.

As part of arrangements for the immediate take-off of the institute, the governor has also approved the conversion of the Kaura Mineral Processing and Buying Centre, located in Gwaram village, Alkaleri Local Government Area, into the temporary site of the MIABAS.

He further directed the relocation of the mineral buying centre to Toro Local Government Area of the state.

A statement issued on Thursday by Fatima Abdulkarim, information officer, Ministry of Natural Resources Development, Bauchi State, said the initiative reflects the government's commitment to developing local expertise, equipping young people with practical and industry-relevant skills, and harnessing the state's mineral resources for sustainable economic growth.

According to the ministry, the institute will offer specialised training in mining, mineral processing, geology and related disciplines, with the aim of expanding opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship and local participation in the solid minerals value chain.

The statement added that the enactment of the law demonstrates the state government's determination to transform Bauchi's natural resource potential into tangible economic opportunities and shared prosperity for its people.

It further stated that details concerning the institute's administrative take-off, commencement of academic activities, available programmes and admission procedures would be communicated through the appropriate official channels.
