A Bauchi-based non-governmental organisation, Pastoral Resolve (PARE), has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his agricultural reforms and called on governments at all levels to provide maximum security for farming and pastoral communities to address food shortages.
The programme coordinator of PARE, Malam Shu'aibu Aliyu Kobi, made the call in a statement issued yesterday to commemorate the 2026 World Food Day.
Kobi said this year's theme, "Innovate Today, Nourish Tomorrow," aligns with PARE's objectives of training rural farmers on modern agricultural technologies to make them self-reliant.
"Food is one of the basic necessities of life apart from clothing and shelter. A country is seen as conducive for investment when it is food sufficient," he said.
He observed that adequate security would enable farmers to cultivate diverse crops and contribute meaningfully to national food security.
According to him, the government can play a vital role by establishing local vigilante groups in communities prone to insecurity and making farm inputs available to local farmers at subsidized and affordable rates.
He explained that such measures would not only boost food production but also encourage unemployed youth to shun criminality and embrace farming as a decent means of livelihood.
Kobi also lauded resilient Nigerian farmers for their dedication and sacrifices in feeding millions despite security and economic challenges.
He reiterated PARE's commitment to enlightening farmers on marketable crops, modern farming practices, adoption of latest innovations and linking them to off-takers for better profits.
