The Lifeline Initiative for Widows Empowerment and Economic Development (LIWEED) has urged communities in Bauchi State to play a greater role in preventing gender-based violence (GBV) and supporting survivors.
The organisation made the call at a sensitisation programme organised for women and adolescents in Tsakanin Bayara community on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
The State Team Lead of LIWEED, Hajia Binta Adamu, said community members had a responsibility to recognise signs of violence, report cases through the appropriate channels and support survivors.
She explained the different forms of GBV, its causes and consequences, as well as those who could potentially perpetrate such acts.
Adamu also sensitised the participants on the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law and the penalties prescribed for perpetrators.
According to her, effective reporting and community support are important in ensuring that survivors are protected and that perpetrators are held accountable.
She cautioned against silence and actions that could discourage victims from seeking help or reporting abuse.
The Executive Director of LIWEED, Amb. Dr. Grace Maikudi, in her welcome remarks, thanked participants for attending and urged them to be attentive throughout the programme.
The participants engaged the facilitators with questions and commended LIWEED for the initiative, pledging to take the message to other women and adolescents in their communities.
