The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has intensified its campaign for environmental protection with the planting of 100 trees in Andiwa and Jogayel communities in Jama'are local government area of Bauchi state.
The exercise forms part of the organisation's broader environmental campaign aimed at combating desertification, erosion and other forms of environmental degradation across the region.
Speaking during the tree-planting exercise yesterday, CITAD Director, Dr. Yunusa Zakari Ya'u, urged communities to make tree planting a regular practice, particularly by replacing old trees lost to development, farming and other human activities.
Y.Z Ya'u stressed the importance of trees to environmental sustainability, noting that they help protect communities from the adverse effects of erosion, desertification and climate-related challenges.
He expressed concern over the gradual disappearance of some traditional, old and heritage trees, warning that failure to take deliberate steps to preserve and replace them could lead to the loss of an important part of the region's natural heritage.
The CITAD director therefore called on individuals, traditional and community leaders, farmers and other stakeholders to take responsibility for planting, nurturing and protecting trees within their communities.
According to him, the tree-planting exercise is part of CITAD's wider target of planting one million trees across the region, stressing that the initiative goes beyond simply increasing the number of trees.
He said the organisation was also seeking to promote a sustainable culture in which communities would not only plant trees but also nurture and protect them to maturity.
Ya'u urged residents of Andiwa, Jogayel and neighbouring communities to regard environmental protection as a collective responsibility, saying concerted community action was necessary to address the growing threat of environmental degradation.
He added that protecting and restoring the environment would contribute to creating a greener, healthier and safer environment for present and future generations.
Expressing their appreciation, Jama’are residents, Adamu Hassan and Amina Ahmed, thanked CITAD for the initiative and commended the organisation for its various programmes aimed at promoting development and improving the wellbeing of residents of Jama'are LGA.
