By Ahmad Saka

The Senator representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, Senator Shehu Buba Umar, has donated ₦6.5 million and assorted relief materials to victims of the recent flood disaster in Bara District of Kirfi Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

The flood reportedly destroyed more than 360 houses, farmlands, livestock, and claimed two lives.

Items donated by the senator include 100 bags of rice, 100 bags of maize, 100 mattresses, 200 blankets, 200 mats, 100 wrappers, 100 bundles of kaftan materials for male victims, and 100 pillows.

Senator Buba, who personally visited the affected community, presented the donations at the palace of the District Head of Bara, Alhaji Muhammadu Abdullahi.

He explained that out of the ₦6.5 million cash donation, ₦5 million was earmarked for the flood victims, while ₦500,000 each was allocated to youths, women, and traditional leaders in the area.

The senator commiserated with the victims and prayed for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives in the disaster.

Addressing the affected residents, Senator Buba assured them of his commitment to supporting them and alleviating their suffering.

He described the scale of devastation caused by the flood as enormous and pledged to raise the matter on the floor of the Senate. According to him, this would help facilitate collaborative efforts among relevant authorities and governments at all levels to provide the necessary support and implement measures to safeguard lives and property.

The District Head of Bara, Alhaji Muhammadu Abdullahi, expressed appreciation to the senator for coming to the aid of the victims and promised that the donated items would be judiciously distributed.

He explained that Bara is located in a low-lying area and often experiences flooding whenever large volumes of water flow into the community from the eastern axis. However, he noted that this year's flood was the worst in recent memory.

According to him, the disaster destroyed more than 360 houses, damaged several structures and farmlands, killed two people, and led to the loss of numerous animals and livestock.

The district head appealed to Senator Buba to facilitate discussions with relevant authorities on possible measures to divert the floodwaters away from Bara town to prevent a recurrence of such disasters.

He also thanked the senator for donating carpeting materials to the Bara Juma'at Mosque and prayed for Allah's abundant blessings upon him.

Some of the flood victims who spoke during the visit expressed gratitude for the senator's gesture, describing him as a representative who places the interests of his constituents above personal considerations.
