The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi Branch, has appealed to the Bala Wunti Support Organisation (BWSO) for support toward completion of its Resident Doctors’ Lounge project aimed at providing a conducive environment for professional development, research and recreation.
The President of ARD ATBUTH, Dr. Salisu Muhammad Mukhtar, made the appeal while receiving the management and staff of BWSO during a courtesy visit to his office.
Dr. Mukhtar explained that the project, which has reached approximately 60 percent completion, was conceived to create a befitting space where resident doctors can relax, conduct research and engage in professional interactions that would ultimately enhance healthcare service delivery at the hospital.
To him, members of the association have solely financed the project through a self-help initiative since its commencement in 2022.
“Each member contributes N10,000 monthly toward the project. Through our collective efforts and commitment, we have been able to bring the project to its current stage despite the numerous challenges encountered along the way,” he said.
The ARD President, however, noted that prevailing economic realities and rising construction costs have significantly weakened the financial capacity of the association, making it difficult to complete the project through members’ contributions alone.
He stressed that the completion of the facility would not only improve the welfare and productivity of resident doctors but would also contribute to improved healthcare services for patients across Bauchi State.
Dr. Mukhtar further disclosed that the association would name the lounge after Dr Bala Maijama'a Wunti should support be provided to facilitate the completion of the project, in recognition of his numerous contributions toward improving access to quality healthcare services and supporting medical interventions across the state.
Earlier in his remarks, the Bauchi State Coordinator of BWSO, Hon. Sha’abdin Bello Zalanga, described support for the completion of the Doctors’ Lounge as an investment in better healthcare outcomes for patients.
According to him, when healthcare professionals are provided with adequate facilities and a conducive working environment, they are better positioned to offer efficient, timely and quality medical services to the public.
Zalanga noted that BWSO has implemented numerous people-oriented interventions across Bauchi State, particularly in healthcare, education, youth empowerment, water and sanitation, as well as humanitarian support programmes aimed at improving the living conditions of vulnerable communities and strengthening public institutions.
Responding, the Chief Executive Officer of BWSO, Malam Mukhtar Ahmed Jarmajo, commended the leadership and members of the Association of Resident Doctors for their vision, sacrifice and commitment toward improving their professional environment through self-help efforts.
He pledged to work towards facilitating the completion of the project, noting that improving the welfare and working conditions of healthcare professionals remains critical to achieving quality healthcare service delivery.
Malam Jarmajo requested the association to provide the project's Bill of Quantities (BOQ), architectural designs and implementation plan to enable the organisation conduct the necessary assessment and determine the most effective areas of intervention.
He stated that BWSO recognizes the strategic role resident doctors play in the healthcare system and remains committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen healthcare institutions and enhance service delivery to patients across Bauchi State.
The CEO further emphasized that investing in healthcare infrastructure and personnel welfare is ultimately an investment in the wellbeing of the people, adding that any support directed toward improving working conditions for medical professionals would translate into better patient care and improved health outcomes.
The courtesy visit formed part of BWSO’s continued engagement with critical stakeholders in the health sector as part of its broader commitment to supporting initiatives that improve healthcare access, service delivery and community wellbeing in Bauchi State.
BWSO Chief Executive Officer was accompanied by the State Coordinator, Hon Sha'abdin Bello Zalanga, Chief Finance Officer, Dr Dauda Umar, Chief of Operations, Alh. Ladan Salihu Kangere, Technical Assistant to the CEO, Abdullahi Sa'ad, PRO, Kamal Ibrahim and Videographer, Adam Mukhtar.
