PRP Condemns Police Attack On Bauchi Journalist, Demands Justice, Accountability

By Khalid Idris Doya

The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Bauchi State Chapter, has strongly condemned the alleged brutal attack on Mr. Mohammed Adamu, a journalist with Albarka Radio, reportedly carried out by police officers in the state over the weekend.

In a statement issued by the State Chairman, Hon. Abdurrahman Yusuf Muazu, the party described the incident said to have occurred during the Eid Durbar celebration in Bununu, Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area as a disturbing reminder of the persistent threats and violence faced by journalists in Nigeria.

The PRP stated that it is unacceptable for media practitioners, who serve as the conscience of society and key pillars of democracy to be subjected to intimidation and physical assault while carrying out their professional duties.

According to reports, Mr. Adamu was allegedly attacked by police officers led by the Divisional Police Officer, Jamilu Kabir, a Superintendent of Police. The assault reportedly left him with serious head injuries, underscoring the severity of the incident.

The party noted that such actions not only violate the fundamental rights of journalists but also undermine press freedom, transparency, and democratic values.

The PRP Bauchi State Chapter called on relevant authorities to launch a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. It also urged the police and other security agencies to respect the critical role of journalists in promoting accountability and informing the public.

Hon. Muazu, who holds the traditional title of Sardaunan Boto, emphasized that journalists are the watchdogs of society, playing an essential role in exposing injustice and holding leaders accountable.

“Their safety and freedom to operate without fear or intimidation are vital to the survival of democracy in Nigeria,” he said.

The party, therefore, demanded immediate justice for Mr. Adamu and called on all stakeholders to work together to create a safe and enabling environment for journalists to perform their duties without fear of harassment or violence.
