Members of the Islamic movement in Nigeria, popularly known as Shi'ites, staged a peaceful demonstration in Bauchi in support of the Palestinian people and Iran.
Leading the procession, the Bauchi State representative of the movement, Malam Ahmad Yusuf Yashi, said the demonstration was part of activities marking International Quds Day, observed on the last Friday of Ramadan worldwide.
According to him, members of the movement usually come out every Friday during Ramadan to show solidarity with Palestinians whom they described as oppressed.
He explained that the march was aimed at protesting against oppression in different parts of the world and calling for justice.
Yashi added that this year's procession also included expressions of support for Iran amid tensions involving the United States and Israel.
He called on both Muslim and Christian communities to show solidarity with the Palestinian people, whom he said had been facing occupation and injustice for decades.
"This is a known demonstration held on the last Friday of Ramadan worldwide under the Quds Day platform. It is organised to show support and sympathy for Palestinians who have been under invasion for about eight decades," he said.
"We conducted a peaceful demonstration in support of Iran, and every Muslim must take a stand in this situation. You are either with the oppressed or with the oppressors," he said.
During the procession, demonstrators waved flags and displayed pictures expressing solidarity with Palestinians and Iran as they marched through some streets of Bauchi metropolis.
They also condemned the recent killing of Iran's Supreme Leader. "They believed that by killing a leader they could end Iran. That is a mistake," he said, adding that Iran continues to operate according to its established system and principles.
Yashi also called on people of different faiths around the world to stand for justice and oppose oppression.
