Bala Wunti Ramadan cup seeks to unite youths through football

A youth group in Bauchi State has organised a Ramadan football competition aimed at fostering unity among young people while celebrating the achievements of oil and gas executive, Bala Wunti.

The competition, tagged Bala Wunti Ramadan Cup, is designed to bring together youths from across the state and provide a positive platform for engagement during the holy month of Ramadan.

Speaking during the tournament kick off on Saturday in Bauchi, Malam Usman Yau the organiser said the initiative was first introduced in 2025 to unite young people from the 20 Local Government Areas of the state.

To also highlight the accomplishments of Wunti after about three decades of service in the oil and gas sector.

According to Yau, the competition seeks to demonstrate the potential of Bauchi youths when given the right platform.

The Organiser noted that Wunti’s professional journey serves as an inspiration for many young people in the state.

He explained that the tournament also provides an opportunity for youths from different backgrounds to interact, strengthen social bonds and promote unity through sports.

“As of last year, the purpose of the Bala Wunti Ramadan Cup was to unite the youths of Bauchi and showcase what indigenous people of the state can achieve if given the right platform.

“Just as Bala Wunti has done in his 30 years of service,” he said.

On his part, Mr Anas Umar, the chairman of the second edition of the tournament, said eight teams drawn from different parts of the state would participate in the competition. 

He noted that the organisers barred professional players in order to ensure fairness among the teams.

Umar added that the matches would run throughout the Ramadan period, beginning with a group-stage round-robin format before progressing to knockout rounds.

According to him, the winning team will receive a cash prize of ₦250,000, bags of rice, medals, trophies and special Ramadan gifts.

“While the runner-up will go home with ₦150,000, alongside medals and trophies.

He said several individual awards would also be presented, including Best Player, Highest Goal Scorer, Best Goalkeeper, Fair Play Team and Fair Play Player, to recognise outstanding performances during the tournament.

Umar expressed optimism that the annual competition would continue to inspire youths, promote sports development and strengthen community engagement across the State.
