NUJ Condemns Police Assault on Bauchi Journalist, Demands Probe

By Rauf Oyewole

The Bauchi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has strongly condemned the assault on a staff member of Albarka Radio by a police officer in Bununu, Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of the state.

The incident, which reportedly occurred during the Sallah celebration, was described by the union as “barbaric, unacceptable, and a gross violation of human rights.”

In a statement issued by the Council’s Secretary, Isah Garba Gadau, the NUJ said the attack represents a direct threat to press freedom and a disturbing display of misconduct by law enforcement officers tasked with protecting citizens.

“This act of brutality is a disgraceful show of lawlessness by officers who are expected to safeguard lives and property,” the statement read.

“It is particularly troubling at a time when the NUJ is intensifying advocacy for professionalism and accountability among security agencies.”

The Council called on the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, to immediately launch a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that all officers involved are identified and appropriately sanctioned.

The NUJ also demanded that the Bauchi State Police Command take full responsibility for the victim’s medical expenses, insisting that prompt action is necessary to demonstrate accountability and restore public confidence.

According to the union, failure to meet the demands may lead to further action, including the convening of an emergency congress to determine the next steps.

The Council further urged media organisations across the state to remain vigilant and await further directives, reiterating its commitment to defending the rights, safety, and dignity of journalists.

“The NUJ will not tolerate intimidation, harassment, or brutality against journalists under any circumstances,” the statement added.
