The Area Veterinary Clinic in Bauchi says it has treated more than 12,500 animals for various ailments in 2025.
The Officer-in-Charge of the facility, Dr Faisal Faruq said that out of the total number of cases handled, about 1,600 were infectious diseases.
Faruq said that the clinic also carried out numerous surgical procedures, including caesarean section, on animals brought to the facility.
He said that 315 cases of dog and cat bites were recorded during the period under review.
He said that many of the animals were affected by diseases of economic and public health importance.
“Rabies was the most prevalent infectious disease recorded in the year under review.
“We also handled cases of diseases of public health concern such as tuberculosis and foot-and-mouth disease.
“In terms of diseases of economic importance, Newcastle disease was the most common, followed by Sheep pox, Capripox and others,” he said.
Faruq noted that in spite of the increasing number of animals brought for treatment, the clinic operated with limited facilities.
He said the clinic had only one theatre, a pharmacy and two treatment rooms, with three specialised units for food, aquatic and small animals.
He called on members of the public to ensure access to healthcare for all animals.
“Animals should be fully vaccinated at all times,” Faruq said.
