PSI Nigeria, WGRDI Support Women in Post-Conflict Communities with Hygiene Supplies

By Bashir Hassan Abubakar

In commemoration of International Women’s Day 2026, Population Services International Nigeria (PSI Nigeria), in collaboration with Women and Girls Rescue Development Initiative (WGRDI), has carried out a menstrual health outreach for women and girls in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The outreach, implemented under the Nigerian Economic Empowerment and Menstrual Health (NEEMH) Project, provided dignity kits and essential menstrual hygiene supplies to women and girls, particularly those living in internally displaced persons (IDP) and conflict-affected communities.

The initiative was conducted in partnership with the Plateau State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare with support from the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development through Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).

According to PSI Nigeria, the activity forms part of efforts to promote menstrual health as a key component of women’s wellbeing, dignity and empowerment.

As part of the programme, beneficiaries received reusable sanitary pads, soap, buckets, underwear, toothbrushes and toothpaste, while trained facilitators conducted menstrual health education sessions to provide accurate information and encourage safe hygiene practices.

Speaking during the outreach, the NEEMH Project Programme Manager, Winifred Kwaknat, noted that improving access to menstrual health products and information is essential for protecting the dignity and wellbeing of women and girls, particularly in vulnerable communities. She added that initiatives such as the outreach help reduce stigma around menstruation while strengthening the resilience and participation of women and girls in their communities.
