Youths Forum petitions Varsity Board over alleged ‘irregularities’ in VC selection

By Monday Danladi

The Concerned Youths Progressive Forum (CYPF) has petitioned the Governing Board of the Federal University, Wukari, against an alleged faulty process of selecting a new Vice Chancellor for the institution.

The petition, signed by the Chairman of CYPF, Abubakar Sambo, expressed profound disappointment and concern regarding the ongoing process, citing irregularities, biases, and a lack of transparency.

The Forum noted that despite numerous candidates who have merited the position through their academic excellence, administrative experience, and contributions to the field, the Governing Board seems to be concentrating on inviting individuals whose professorship is questionable and lacks merit.

According to the Forum, "This selective approach undermines the principles of fairness and meritocracy and jeopardizes the future of the university."

It observed that the interview session, which was slated for Friday, has been put on hold due to the immense outcry and confusion generated by the unjust and unacceptable process.

The CYPF welcomed the development and urged the relevant authorities to intervene and review the entire process to ensure that justice and fairness are served.

Abubakar Sambo, Chairman of the Forum said: "We believe that the integrity of the Federal University, Wukari, is at stake, and it is our collective responsibility to protect it.

"We call upon all relevant authorities, including the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC), and the Department of State Services (DSS), to conduct a thorough investigation into this matter and take necessary actions to ensure that the process is fair, transparent, and merit-based," he added.

The CYPF demands that the Governing Board immediately halt the ongoing process and conduct a thorough review of the shortlisted candidates to ensure that only those who meet the required standards are considered.

The Forum also wants the inclusion of all meritorious candidates in the interview process, ensuring that everyone has an equal opportunity to showcase their qualifications and expertise and ensuring that the interview process is transparent, fair, and conducted in accordance with the university's established rules and regulations.

It also demanded for the provision of a clear criteria for the selection process, ensuring that the stakeholders are aware of the requirements and expectations.

The Forum urged the relevant authorities to look into the circumstances surrounding the selection process and bring to justice anyone found to have compromised the integrity of the process.
