The Management of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare (FUHSA), Bauchi State, has warned newly admitted students against cultism and other anti-social vices, stressing that the institution operates a zero-tolerance policy on all forms of misconduct.

The warning came on Saturday, January 31, 2026, during the university’s matriculation ceremony for the 2025/2026 academic session, held at the institution’s temporary campus in Azare, headquarters of Katagum Local Government Area.

A total of 1,448 students were matriculated into various programmes of the university.

Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bala Audu, disclosed that the newly admitted students comprise 1,076 students across 20 departments in the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, 109 students in the MBBS Medicine and Surgery programme, and 49 students in the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme.

According to him, the total number includes 551 males and 937 females.

Prof. Audu described matriculation as a cardinal academic requirement that formally qualifies students as bona fide members of the university community.

“Today, in line with this tradition, the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare, officially inducts you into its academic community. You were carefully selected from among many qualified candidates, but limited space made it impossible to admit everyone,” he said.

While congratulating the students on their admission, the Vice-Chancellor assured them of the university’s commitment to providing full academic and moral support to ensure their success.

He, however, cautioned them to be law-abiding and to pursue their studies with seriousness and diligence.

“FUHSA maintains a zero-tolerance policy for social vices such as cultism, examination malpractice, sexual harassment, drug abuse, indecent dressing, vandalism and truancy. These acts are strictly prohibited and attract uncompromising disciplinary measures as contained in the students’ handbook,” Audu warned.

He urged the students to read and make proper use of the students’ handbook, stressing that the oath taken during matriculation signifies their commitment to abide by the university’s laws and standards of conduct.

The Vice-Chancellor also assured the students of improved security on campus, revealing that the university is working closely with security agencies to safeguard lives and property.

“A military checkpoint will soon be mounted near the university’s main gate, with constant night patrols. The Bauchi State Government has also donated a patrol vehicle to the university, while construction of a perimeter fence around the female hostel has commenced to enhance security and privacy,” he said.

On students’ welfare, Prof. Audu acknowledged challenges such as inadequate hostel accommodation, lecture halls, power supply and water shortages, but assured that efforts are ongoing to address them.

He disclosed that plans are underway to provide 24-hour power and water supply through solar energy, with support from the Federal Ministry of Education and an African Development Bank (AfDB) intervention project.

The Vice-Chancellor further announced the construction of additional classrooms and male hostels to ease infrastructural pressure on the campus.

He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the introduction of the NELFUND programme, noting that 1,798 FUHSA students benefited during the current academic session, with their registration fees fully paid.

Prof. Audu also appreciated the Bauchi State Government, under Governor Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, for allocating an additional 500 hectares of land at Dugunde Forest along the Azare–Potiskum Road, bringing the university’s permanent site to 600 hectares.

He added that part of the land would be utilized for students’ entrepreneurial activities.

The Vice-Chancellor further expressed gratitude to Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, for constructing six units of three-bedroom staff quarters, as well as OPAY Digital Services, which provides a 10-year scholarship worth ₦300,000 annually to 20 indigent students of the university.
