FUHSA Matriculates 1,448 Students, VC Declares Zero Tolerance For Social Vices

By Khalid Idris Doya

The Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare (FUHSA), Bauchi State, has matriculated a total of 1,448 newly admitted students for the 2025/2026 academic session, comprising 551 males and 937 females.

Recalls that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently immortalised the late Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi by renaming the FUHSA after him. The relevant authorities said they are currently working to complete all necessary steps to formalise the change of the university's name.

The matriculation took place during the 4th Matriculation Ceremony held at the University premises yesterday, where the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bala M. Audu, described the exercise as a compulsory academic tradition that formally confers bona fide student status on newly admitted candidates and inducts them into the FUHSA academic community.

Prof. Audu assured the students of the University's full academic and moral support, stressing that FUHSA is committed not only to knowledge acquisition but also to character development.

According to him, the oath administered during the ceremony symbolised the students' commitment to abide by the laws of the University, statutes, and standards of decorum throughout their stay.

The Vice-Chancellor announced that the University Senate has approved the continuation of academic activities into the second semester without a break, in order to recover lost academic time.

He further warned that FUHSA operates a zero-tolerance policy for social vices such as cultism, examination malpractice, sexual harassment, drug abuse, indecent dressing, vandalism, and truancy, noting that any violation would attract strict disciplinary measures as contained in the Students' Handbook.

"You are required to be law-abiding students and to face your studies with seriousness and hard work. We pray and look forward to your successful graduation without stagnation, so that you will be the pride of your parents, this University, and the nation at large," he said.

Prof. Audu advised the students to read and fully understand the Students' Handbook, which provides comprehensive guidance on rules, regulations, and academic life within the institution.

He disclosed that 1,076 students were matriculated across 20 departments in the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, 109 students in the MBBS Medicine and Surgery programme, and 49 students in the BDS Dentistry programme, bringing the total intake to 1,448 students.

On campus security, the Vice-Chancellor assured students of adequate protection of lives and property, noting that the University is working in synergy with security agencies. He revealed that a military checkpoint would soon be mounted near the University’s main gate, with regular night patrols.

He also disclosed that the Bauchi State Government has donated a patrol vehicle to the University, while construction of a perimeter fence around the female hostel has commenced to enhance privacy and security.

Addressing students' welfare, Prof. Audu acknowledged existing challenges, including inadequate hostel accommodation, lecture halls, and unstable power supply, which also affects water availability.

However, he assured that the management is working round the clock to address the issues, including plans to achieve 24-hour power and water supply through solar energy.

He commended the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, for facilitating an African Development Bank intervention project to establish a solar farm in the University.

The Vice-Chancellor also announced the ongoing construction of additional classrooms and male hostels to ease infrastructural shortages on campus.

Audu expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for introducing the NELFUND Programme, which has significantly eased students’ financial burdens. He disclosed that 1,798 students benefited from the scheme in the current academic session, with their registration fees fully paid.

He further appreciated Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, for allocating an additional 500 hectares of land at Dugunde Forest, bringing the University’s permanent site to 600 hectares, noting that part of the land would be used for student entrepreneurial activities.

He further commended the Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, for constructing six units of three-bedroom staff houses within the University staff quarters.

Prof. Audu acknowledged the support of Aminu Saleh College of Education, Azare, for providing hostel accommodation and lecture halls under a Memorandum of Understanding, as well as the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Azare, for supporting clinical training for medical and dental students.

He urged newly matriculated students to be worthy ambassadors of their families, the University, and Nigeria.
