The 2025 Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) unity football tournament has commenced in Bauchi with six states of the North East region participating to battle for the cup.
Addressing sports journalists at the commencement of the games in Bauchi, the Chairman of the Competition, Dr. Abubakar Sadiq Fakai said, the tournament was part of activities lined up in commemoration of the upcoming 25 years anniversary celebrations of the Arewa Consultative Forum.
Fakai explained that the competition would give more opportunities to the teaming youths across 19 northern states to showcase their talent to the entire world.
The chairman called on the participating states to be committed and to be good ambassadors of their respective states, before, during and after the tournament.
He said from the north east, his team would proceed to North Central on the same mission, with Kebbi State already emerged winner of the North West edition of the unity football tournament.
Fakai added that winners from each zone would converge in Kaduna and decide the overall winner of the annual unity football tournament of the Arewa consultative forum.
Also speaking, a member of the committee Alhaji Sherif Banki, urged players and their officials to take advantage of the tournament and make friends, saying football brings people together irrespective of their culture, background and religion.
Banki insisted that ACF has been a backbone of Northern Nigeria interests and has been championing peace and harmony of the country.
In the opening games, host Bauchi State overcame Taraba 2-1, as Gombe recorded the same margin against Borno state.
Other matches scheduled to continue on Monday and Tuesday at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium, Bauchi.
The theme for for the unity football tournament 2025 is "promoting unity, peace and youth empowerment through sports"
