The Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) says it has strengthened community structures on preparedness and resilience during pandemics in Bauchi State.
Hajiya Yagana Gidado, FOMWAN Project Coordinator in Bauchi, stated this on Wednesday at a dissemination meeting for stakeholders in the state.
She explained that the project, funded by CIET PRAM, a Non-Governmental Organization, was implemented in 16 communities of Darazo Local Government Area.
Gidado said the initiative aimed to strengthen social support networks and build community resilience, especially among vulnerable populations to prepare for future pandemics.
According to her, the sessions were part of a five-year project titled “Building on Strength Using Local Knowledge to Inform Evidence-Based Decision Making for COVID-19 Recovery in Bauchi State.
She added that the groups were also trained on empowerment skills to promote self-reliance and improve livelihoods.
“Dialogue groups were formed across communities to aid sessions and ensure effective implementation and impact of the project.
“The targeted population included both men and women. Some sessions focused on empowerment to reduce hardship and encourage access to financial income.
“The programme will help vulnerable households cope with the aftermath of pandemics, noting that many families experienced severe hardship during the COVID-19 outbreak,” she said.
In his remarks, Alhaji Usman Ilelleh, Director of Cooperatives, Bauchi State Ministry for Small and Medium Enterprises, said the state government planned to revive Women Development Centres across the 20 Local Government Areas.
He added that women and youths would benefit from various skills development programmes to support households across the state.
