Group trains pupils on hand washing, personal hygiene

A civil society organisation, Journalists for Public Health and Development Initiative (J4PD) has trained pupils on the importance of personal hygiene and hand washing practice.

The Group while marking this year's World Hand Washing Day at the Meenat Scholar Academy, Bauchi Wednesday, said that it became necessary to take the hygiene campaign to young people who spread messages among their peers.

Team lead of the Organisation, Elizabeth Carr highlighted the importance of regular hand washing and other personal hygiene to prevent diseases. According to her, the organisation chose the school to mark the international day as part of a campaign to promote good health and a clean environment.

She urged the kids to inculcate the habit of regular cleanliness and encourage each other to practice hand washing after using the toilet.

There was a practical demonstration of proper hand washing practice. The group also enlightened the school administrators to keep the hand washing facilities available for the pupils.

Mr Ishola Michael, Programme Coordinator of the Group emphasised on proper hand washing and application of soup and water to prevent germs and diseases from hand which he said is close to mouth, eyes and nose.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said that only 35 per cent of schools have basic hand washing facilities and only eight per cent of Nigerians can properly demonstrate hand washing techniques.

It said further that while 99percent of Nigerians are aware of when to wash their hands, only 8 percent can demonstrate proper hand washing techniques. Only 17 per cent of households have access to basic hygiene services. Only 35 percent of schools have basic hand-washing facilities with soap and water.
