Insecurity: Bauchi trains LGA officials on intelligence gathering

By Rauf Oyewole

In an attempt to nip the growing insecurity in the bud, the Bauchi State Government has organised an intelligence gathering training for various security desk officers at the 20 local government areas of Bauchi State.

The training was organised by the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in partnership with Bauchi State Police Command to boost community policing at the grassroots where most of the crimes are committed.

According to the Commissioner, Hon. Isa Babayo Tilde, said that the departmental security officers are being equipped to further deploy their duties amidst security threats around the state to assist the security agencies in intelligence gathering that would be proceeded for action.

Tilde, who was represented by a director in the Ministry, Bala Abdul, said that they were drawn from the 20 local government areas to attend the four-day workshop on effectiveness of their office.

Recall that bandits struck communities in Alkaleri local government area of state where scores of villagers were killed including hunters who were ambushed and cattle rustled.

In his paper presentation, titled “roles of citizens/youth in community policing and crime prevention” the Public Relations Officer of the Command, CSP Ahmed Wakil, expressed dissatisfaction with community and police relationship.

“The Nigeria community does not trust the Nigeria Police. The police too have no respect for the community. When members of the community witness a crime, they run away from the police, rather than run to the police to report the crime. This makes the task of policing very difficult.

“Given the sour relationship between the police and the members of the public, it is not surprising that the Force has been largely ineffective in performing its constitutional roles. Community oriented policing is a proactive philosophy that promotes solving problems that are either criminal, affect the quality of the, or increase fear of crime.”

Also, speaking, CSP Mohammed Barau, another facilitator said urged regular risk assessments to identify potential threats and vulnerabilities, development and implementing security protocols and procedures and providing training and capacity building for security personnel and public office holders.

Barau said that by engaging with the community to build trust and promote cooperation, implementing the measures, public office holders and traditional rulers can reduce a safer and ensure a safer and more secure environment.
