Dr Aisha Mohammed of Pediatric Department, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital( ATBUTH), Bauchi, has attributed hard labour, emotional stress and anxiety to factors affecting low production of breast milk in lactating mothers.

She said that mothers often introduced formula due to the absence of adequate breast milk.

“Hard labour and emotional stress reduces production of breast milk. Breastfeeding mothers should eat well and have a good rest,”she said.

Speaking on family planning, the expert revealed that exclusive breastfeeding was another method for family for the first six months.

“There is a hormonal pathway that inhibits conception and mensuration of exclusive breastfeeding is practice.

“Mothers can adopt exclusive breastfeeding as a method for family planning,” Mohammed added.

She advocated friendly breastfeeding initiatives by hospitals, workplaces and communities to support lactating mothers.

Mohammed explained the benefits of exclusives as a major practice for mother to child bonding.

“Exclusive breastfeeding is healthy, economical and cheap but mothers should have an adequate balanced diet,” she added.
