The Northern Initiative for Good Governance has endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in 2027, citing improved security under the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd).
Speaking at a press conference in Bauchi on Wednesday, the National Director of the group, Hon. Kabir Bello Umar Katuka, said the reduction in insecurity in the North had emboldened the group to campaign for the President's re-election.
Katuka said Nigeria's security situation has significantly improved since Musa assumed office as Minister of Defence.
According to him, the group undertook an assessment of security developments across the country and observed a marked decline in banditry, insurgency and kidnapping.
He recalled that Musa, during his tenure as Chief of Defence Staff, helped restore peace in several troubled areas.
"Immediately he retired from service, insecurity returned. The country started recording widespread abductions of schoolchildren and killings. They blocked roads, kidnapped and killed innocent people," Katuka said.
He said President Tinubu's decision to appoint Musa as Defence Minister was widely celebrated across religious and ethnic lines.
"Both Christians and Muslims prayed for him and were happy about his appointment. Since then, he has achieved tremendously in tackling insecurity," he said.
Katuka claimed that peace has returned to the North-East, where Boko Haram activities have been degraded.
He alleged that the few remaining incidents of insecurity were politically motivated.
"The few incidents of insecurity we are witnessing are the handiwork of the opposition, those who want to give the government a bad name for political reasons," he said.
The group said its endorsement of President Tinubu was based on the performance of the Musa-led Defence Ministry.
"We are endorsing Tinubu to continue in 2027 because Christopher Musa is really performing under his government. He has helped to restore peace in the North-East, and because of his good work, we are going to not only canvas votes for Tinubu but ensure overwhelming victory for him in 2027," Katuka stated.
He commended President Tinubu for the appointment and called on Nigerians, particularly in the North, to support the minister and sustain prayers for peace.
