Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, has been honoured with the Gazelle News 2026 Governor of the Year on Grassroots Development Award in recognition of his leadership and achievements in infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture and rural development.
The award was presented at the annual Gazelle News Lecture and Awards held on Wednesday at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos.
According to a statement by the governor's special adviser on media and publicity, Comrade Mukhtar Gidado, who received the award on behalf of the governor, the event attracted political leaders, policymakers, media executives, business leaders, traditional rulers and civil society representatives from across the country.
The organisers said the award recognised Governor Mohammed's commitment to grassroots development and his administration's performance in infrastructure development, healthcare delivery, education, agriculture, rural development, social welfare, youth empowerment and inclusive governance.
They noted that his people-centred policies have improved the living standards of residents and positioned Bauchi State as one of Nigeria's emerging models of sustainable and inclusive development.
The deputy governor of Lagos State, Dr. Kadri Hamzat, who was represented by former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, chaired the event, while the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Chief Sunday Dare, delivered the keynote lecture titled, "Driving Grassroots Governance Through Public-Private Partnership: The Gains, the Pains and the Prospects."
In his presentation, Dare emphasised the need for visionary leadership, effective communication, accountability and good governance in promoting national development and strengthening democratic institutions.
Earlier, the Editor-in-Chief of Gazelle News, Mr. Musba'u Rasak, said the annual lecture and awards ceremony was established to recognise individuals whose contributions have positively impacted governance, nation-building and socio-economic development in Nigeria.
Other prominent Nigerians from various sectors were also honoured for their outstanding contributions to national development.
Receiving the award on behalf of the governor, Mukhtar Gidado expressed appreciation to the management of Gazelle News, describing the recognition as a validation of Governor Mohammed's commitment to delivering democratic dividends to the people of Bauchi State.
He said the governor dedicated the award to the people of the state for their continued support and cooperation, which, according to him, has inspired the administration's commitment to people-oriented policies and sustainable development.
Gidado added that the administration remains focused on expanding infrastructure, improving healthcare and education, boosting agricultural productivity, empowering women and youths, promoting rural development and implementing social protection programmes.
He noted that Bauchi State has recorded significant investments in road construction, urban renewal, healthcare infrastructure, education, water supply, housing, agriculture and social welfare under Governor Mohammed's leadership.
He reiterated that the governor views every recognition as a challenge to do more and assured that his administration would remain committed to transparency, accountability, inclusiveness and sustainable development.
"The Gazelle News Governor of the Year on Grassroots Development Award is another national recognition of Governor Bala Mohammed's visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to improving the welfare of the people of Bauchi State," Gidado said.
