By Khalid Idris Doya

The Bauchi state government has carried out an on-the-spot assessment of flood-affected areas in Dunguri Community, Alkaleri local government area, as part of efforts to address recurring flooding across the state.

The inspection team, led by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works and Transport, Engr. Mohammed Hamisu Garba, was directed by Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed to evaluate the extent of damage caused by the flood and recommend urgent and long-term engineering solutions.

During the visit,  Engr. Mohammed Hamisu Garba said the exercise reflects the present administration's commitment to protecting lives and property and finding lasting solutions to environmental and infrastructural challenges in flood-prone communities.

He explained that the team inspected affected drainage systems, culverts, roads, and erosion-prone locations to enable the ministry to prepare a comprehensive technical report for immediate government action.

The Permanent Secretary assured residents that the government remains committed to sustainable infrastructure development, urban renewal, and effective flood control measures aimed at reducing the impact of seasonal flooding across Bauchi State.

He also urged residents to maintain proper environmental sanitation and avoid dumping refuse into drainage channels, warning that such practices worsen flooding and block water flow during heavy rainfall.

According to him, contractors handling drainage-related projects would be mobilised to the site on or before Monday to commence urgent intervention works.

According to him, the Bauchi state government reiterated its commitment to addressing environmental challenges and strengthening infrastructure development to improve the living conditions of residents across the state.

Community leaders and residents who accompanied the inspection team expressed appreciation to Governor Bala Mohammed for his prompt response and concern for their welfare.

They also commended the Ministry of Works and Transport for its swift intervention and appealed for the immediate execution of flood control measures to prevent further destruction.

The Councillor of Duguri, Malam Lawal Ya’u, also thanked the state government for its responsiveness and continued support to the affected community.
