Bauchi ADC in legal turmoil over state chairmanship

By Rauf Oyewole

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Bauchi State has been fragmented over the leadership crisis facing the party, while a faction has obtained court induction to affirm suspension against the state chairman.

The deputy chairman of the party, Mahmood Hassan Tabla said that the chairman, Hassan Haruna has been suspended from the party over alleged anti-party activities, of which a disciplinary panel found him guilty and recommended his suspension.

Tabla, who addressed a press conference on Tuesday, said that Haruna was accused of anti party “activities and parallelisation” in the wards and local government levels by recognising different sets of party executives and other infractions contrary to article 15 (a) of the ADC Constitution.

“After the expiration of the 14 days open for appeal, the local government executives in collaboration with their ward executives further resolved and issued circular No. BA/01/003/2026 which removed Mallam Hassan Haruna from office as State Chairman of the ADC and directed me as his deputy to take over as acting chairman of the party.

“The ward and local government executives alleged that the press release dated 18th January, 2026 by the suspended Chairman and his utterances of calling them ‘bandits’, ‘hired agents’ were highly defamatory of their character and further attempts to announce a new secretary and new set of local government chairmen as an infringement of not only the ADC Constitution but the rules of engagement under the Freedom of Association provided by the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.

“They removed him as state chairman and also sued him to the Bauchi State High Court together with the 20 names in the 18th January, 2026 press release.

“The Bauchi State High Court has on the 4th February, 2026 issued an order of interim injunction restraining them from parading themselves as ADC executives and adjourned for further hearing to 19th February, 2026. A copy of the court order in Suit No. BA/38/2026 is available for sighting.”
