No fewer than 20 adolescent girls from different communities in Bauchi State have been trained on the marketing of reusable sanitary pads by Population Services International (PSI) Nigeria, in collaboration with the Bauchi State Ministry of Women Affairs and Child Development.
The one-day training focused on financial literacy and entrepreneurship, equipping participants with skills in income generation, money management, saving and business planning to support community-level distribution of reusable pads.
An official of PSI Nigeria, Plangnan Dashe, said the initiative aims to promote affordable and sustainable menstrual hygiene management while empowering adolescent girls economically.
A reusable pad producer, Adah Samuel, explained that the pads are made from locally sourced, safe materials and can last up to two years when properly maintained, making them a cheaper alternative to disposable sanitary products.
The Gender Desk Officer of the Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Board, Amina Balali, described the initiative as timely, noting that reusable pads would help reduce unhealthy menstrual hygiene practices, particularly in rural communities.
Beneficiaries of the training are expected to serve as pioneer distributors of reusable sanitary pads in their respective communities, with plans to scale up the initiative across the state.
