The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has raised serious concerns over the alleged worsening water crisis affecting students in several tertiary institutions across Gombe State.
The association in a press release by its North East zonal coordinator, Mu'azu Hina, described the situation as unacceptable and dangerous, warning that it poses a significant threat to students’ health and academic performance.
According to him, students are currently facing an alarming shortage of potable water.
He explained that the problem has been worsened by the ongoing cankerworm infestation, which has disrupted water sources and sanitation facilities, increasing the risk of disease and poor hygiene.
Hina emphasised that access to clean water is a basic human right and essential for effective learning.
He appealed to the North East Development Commission (NEDC) to urgently intervene by providing solar-powered boreholes and sustainable water infrastructure to affected institutions.
He noted that addressing water and power challenges in educational institutions is in line with NEDC’s developmental and humanitarian mandate, particularly in rebuilding and strengthening social infrastructure across the North East.
Despite repeated appeals and engagements with the Commission, the coordinator revealed that the crisis remains unresolved, calling for immediate action to prevent further deterioration of students’ welfare and institutional stability.
Comrade Muazu Hina warned that while NANS remains committed to peaceful dialogue and responsible advocacy, the association would continue to amplify the voices of students until meaningful intervention is achieved.
“NANS North East will not be silent in the face of neglect. We will continue to advocate, engage, and demand accountability in the interest of Nigerian students and the future of education in the region,” he said.
The association also called on relevant government agencies, development partners, civil society organisations, and well-meaning Nigerians to support efforts to resolve the crisis and ensure a safe, healthy learning environment for students in Gombe State and across the North East.
