Thousands of fitness enthusiasts on Saturday, December 13, 2025, thronged major streets of Bauchi metropolis for the 7th Annual Grand Walk organised by the Bauchi State Coalition of Physical Fitness Clubs (APFCB), reinforcing advocacy for healthy living and social cohesion.
The event recorded a massive turnout of fitness clubs operating across the state, alongside the participation of high-profile dignitaries, including the Bauchi State Deputy Governor, His Excellency Mohammed Auwal Jatau; federal lawmakers; the Speaker and members of the Bauchi State House of Assembly; commissioners; as well as officers and men of the Nigerian Air Force and other distinguished guests.
The 11-kilometre walk commenced at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium (ATBS) in a festive atmosphere marked by drum beats, energetic music from deejays, and colourful displays by power bikers, roller skaters and cyclists, all of which added excitement and visual appeal to the procession.
Speaking after the walk, Chairman of the APFCB, Honourable Aminu Ali Garu, commended participants for their enthusiasm and commitment. Garu, who represents Bauchi Central Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, said the annual grand walk serves not only as a platform to promote physical fitness among residents, but also as a tool for fostering unity, friendship and peaceful coexistence across the state. He also expressed appreciation to sponsors for providing jerseys and logistical support that ensured the success of the event.
In a goodwill message, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Right Honourable Tajudeen Abbas, commended the coalition for its consistency in organising the annual walk, noting that the initiative strengthens bonds of unity, brotherhood and social interaction.
Represented by the Chairman, House Committee on Sports, Hon. Kabiru Ahmed, Abbas described the grand walk as a noble initiative worthy of replication by other states and pledged to encourage fellow lawmakers to promote similar activities in their constituencies.
Goodwill messages were also delivered by representatives of the Bauchi State Government, Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Shafa Organisation, major sponsors, women participants—who called for increased female participation—and the Bikers Association, which disclosed plans to explore the possibility of hosting a bikers’ event in the near future.
Several participants expressed satisfaction with the success of the walk. However, one of the participants, Mrs Rabi Ekele, raised concerns about the pace of the procession, noting that some participants were left behind. She stressed that the activity was meant to be a walk rather than a race, urging organisers to be more inclusive of vulnerable groups in future editions. Despite the concern, Ekele acknowledged that the annual grand walk continues to improve, with growing participation from fitness clubs and other enthusiasts.
