Organisation trains 200 Bauchi young women in tech to tame GBV

A non-governmental organisation, Girl-Child Values Support Initiative has trained 200 young women in different aspects of tech skills to advance their skills and economic status to fight the rising cases of gender based violence.

Bauchi State, according to the Police Command, recorded 1,507 cases of gender-based violence between January and June 2023. The period witnessed an upsurge of the violence against persons, particularly women. 

To curb the trend, the Organisation believed that empowering young women to be tech-driven and economically strong could tame the tide. According to the, Owa Oluwatosin Zuriel, a Senior Programme Officer with Girl Child Values Support Initiative, said that over the past six months, the Initiative has been implementing, “Science, Technology, Arts and Mathematics” (STEAMinists) for girls including the persons with disabilities.



According to Israel, girls between age 18 - 35 including those with disabilities are currently undergoing a 6-month skill acquisition and trading in Bauchi and supported by the French Embassy Fund. 

He added that the young girls are being trained in; Application Development, Graphics Design and Visual Arts, Web Design and Development, App Development, 3D Animation, 3D Modelling, Soldering and Electronics, Photography and Videography, Digital Storytelling and Podcasting, Drama and Theatre.


Aisha Abdulakeem, one of the beneficiaries explained that the training has exposed her to different knowledge on how to be financially independent as a woman and stand against any form of gender based violence. “With this skill, I have started making some things and getting paid for it. I'm going to expand this knowledge to attract bigger gigs and empower others,” she said.

Another tech trainee, Jaiyeola Dolapo, said that she has been better equipped than her pre-training period. “I am into graphic design and I'm proud to say that I have been making cool money from it and with this, unemployment is far from me.”
