FG trains 300 tractor operators, mechanics to boost food security, modernize agriculture

By Ahmed Ahmed

The Federal Government has commenced a strategic training program for 300 tractor operators and mechanics across 19 northern states aimed at transforming the agricultural sector through mechanization.

The training is being held at the Agricultural Mechanics and Machinery Operators Training Centre (AMMOTRAC) on Monday in Misau, Bauchi State.

Speaking at the event Dr. Markus Ogunbiyi, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, represented by Mr. Ibrahim Majeed, Director, Federal Department of Agricultural Mechanization, emphasized that mechanization is key to achieving food security and economic growth.

“To move from subsistence farming to modern, efficient, and competitive agriculture, we must embrace mechanization.

“A tractor is only as effective as the operator who drives it and the mechanic who maintains it. This training is a strategic investment in human capacity to ensure our agricultural machinery operates optimally.” he said.

Dr. Ogunbiyi explained that the program is aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes increased agricultural productivity, job creation for youth, and sustainable farming practices.

He urged participants to take the training seriously, noting that it would equip them with both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience in operating and maintaining tractors.

In a remark, Mr. Salisu Dendo, Chairman of Misau Local Government Area commended the federal government for reviving the centre, stressing that the program would boost food production and tackle insecurity.

He appealed to the federal government to upgrade the centre with modern facilities to enhance its capacity.

“The training is expected to significantly reduce machinery breakdown during critical farming seasons, lower production costs, and increase overall agricultural output,” he said.

Also speaking, Mr. Hamisu Kwami, Head of AMMOTRAC, explained that the centre’s mandate is to train both government and private tractor operators and mechanics across the northern region.
