CHAMPS Trains 40 TBAs to Improve Maternal, Child Health in Bauchi

By Ahmed Ahmed

The Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) of the College of Medical Sciences, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, has strengthened the capacity of 40 Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) from Bauchi and Ganjuwa Local Government Areas on safe delivery practices.

The training workshop, which brought together TBAs from various communities, is part of CHAMPS' ongoing efforts to bridge critical gaps in maternal and child healthcare, especially in rural and underserved parts of Bauchi State.

Speaking during the event, Dr. Jamilu Yaya, the Lead Community Engagement Officer for CHAMPS in Bauchi, provided an overview of the project.

He explained that the initiative is committed to reducing child mortality through community-based interventions and strong collaborations with frontline caregivers such as TBAs.

Yaya noted that empowering TBAs with practical knowledge on safe delivery is key to improving survival rates of mothers and newborns in remote areas where access to modern healthcare facilities is often limited.

Also addressing the participants, Dr. Shuwaiba Ayuba of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) emphasised the importance of recognising danger signs during pregnancy and childbirth.

She highlighted the need for TBAs to promptly refer women with complications to appropriate health facilities for timely medical intervention.

In addition, Dr. Abdullahi Gumau of ATBUTH conducted an interactive session focused on enhancing the delivery skills of TBAs to ensure safer births and healthier outcomes for both mothers and their babies.

Expressing her appreciation, Mariya Hassan, one of the participants and a practising TBA, thanked the organisers for the invaluable training.

“We have learned a lot and we assure you that we will put this knowledge to good use in our communities,” she said.
