In commemoration of this year's Menstrual Day, the Kairos Initiative, a non-governmental organisation in Bauchi State has distributed menstrual hygiene kits called ‘dignity kits’ to adolescent girls in Bauchi school.
The kit, which consists of menstrual pads, soap, pants and necessary items, serves as a mobile pack where young women can result during unexpected menstrual periods.
The team lead of Kairos Initiative, Dr. Moji Iheme, while speaking on Thursday, said that the gesture was to educate young girls about menstrual hygiene and boost their self esteem during menstrual periods. She said that most of them still find it difficult and challenging handling their periods.
She said that the organisation selected 50 girls for sensitisation on how to fix and dispose used sanitary pads which she said pose more danger to their health.
“We are making them understand that menstruation is not a taboo but of a woman. We are also educating them to seek their space as a woman in society,” she said.
The adolescent girls were given the dignity kits which they were told to keep constantly in their bags. They girls appreciated the Initiative and were elated for the support.
