Malaria takes toll on Bauchi children as 32% of under 5 kids affected

Bauchi State Action Committee on Tuberculosis, Malaria and HIV/AIDs (BACATMA) has revealed that 32% of under 5 children were affected by the Malaria disease.

The Executive Chairman, Dr Adamu Sambo, said this on the occasion to commemorate the World Malaria Day in Bauchi.

He highlighted that the day was for continued efforts to combat malaria, which remains a major public health challenge in the state.

Represented by the director of Administration and Human Resources, Shehu Yakubu said the state has made progress in combating malaria through various initiatives, including mass distribution of insecticide-treated nets, seasonal malaria chemoprevention, and training of community health workers.

The Executive Chairman, calls on all stakeholders, including governments, development partners, traditional and religious leaders, health workers, and families, to step up their efforts to combat malaria.

He concludes with a call to action, emphasizing the need for continued political commitment and funding to win the war against malaria.

Corroborating, the director Malaria Control, Mohd Bello explained that Malaria prevalence in Bauchi State is approximately 32% among children under 5, according to the 2021 National Malaria Indicator Survey (NMIS).

He said, more needs to be done to achieve the goal of eliminating malaria by 2030.

Also, the Programme Coordinator, Malaria Consortium, Alh Umar Babuga, said the organization would continue to support the State government towards eradicating the disease in Bauchi.

Other speakers emphasised on the need for collective action and continued efforts to combat malaria is particularly noteworthy.

The theme: "Malaria Ends With Us" Reinvest, Reimagine, Reignite. with a Slogan: Stay Committed. Also saw a street walk to create awareness.
