The Bauchi State Government has reacted to the viral video clip showing a person with disability being dragged and bitten by security guard mounted at the Government House Gate during the Thursday’s #EndBadGovernmentInNigeria protest.
The clip showed a man with disability on his wheelchair and another person with placards being physically assaulted by three police officers in their black camouflage uniform and another one in suit and tie. A voice was heard saying; “see us going about our peaceful protest. They came and stopped us…”
While reacting to the brutality, the Special Adviser to Governor Bala Mohammed, Mukhtar Gidado in a statement on Friday morning, said that the is deeply concerned “by the recent online video of an infraction involving a person with disability and security personnel at a cordoned area in the government house yesterday.”
He said that Bala Mohammed does not condone any form of violence or misconduct by law enforcement officers attached to the Government House or any government personnel.
He said that the welfare and rights of all citizens, especially vulnerable groups, are of paramount importance to the administration and consequently, “the government will initiate a thorough investigation into this incident to ascertain the facts.”
He said that: “We assure the general public that if the officers involved are found to have acted improperly, they will be held accountable and face the full extent of the law. The Bauchi State Government remains committed to upholding the principles of justice, fairness, and respect for human rights.
He urged the public to remain calm and to abide by all rules and regulations especially as it relates to demonstration and processions during the period of nationwide protest.
