MOSOP accuses NNPC for exclusion of ogonis in pipeline surveillance job

By Editor

Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) has said that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) should be held responsible for any breakdown of law and order, given the exclusion of the Ogonis in the pipeline surveillance contract awarded by the Federal Government.

According to the MOSOP President, Prof Anda Wai-Ogosu made the statement in an interview with journalists in Port Harcourt on Sunday.

According to him, it is difficult to understand the reason the Ogonis should be excluded in the pipeline surveillance contract, when majority of the country's oil installations are domiciled in Ogoniland and the pipelines that transport oil/gas to the terminals crisscross the length and breadth of Ogoni land.

Prof Wai-Ogosu therefore said that the NNPCL should be held responsible, should there be breakdown of law and order in the area.

"Major oil and gas installations of the Federal Government are domiciled in Ogoniland, with pipelines carrying crude oil and gas to the Bonny Terminal and other places criss-crossing the entire Ogoniland, so why would NNPCL not include the Ogonis in the pipeline surveillance contract," the MOSOP President asked?

He reiterated that the Ogonis are not against the resumption of oil exploration in their land, but are insisting that there must be proper negotiation and dialogue with the stakeholders before such a thing would be possible.

It was gathered that the youths of Ogoni have given the Federal Government a 2-week ultimatum to address the issue,or risk shutdown of operations in the affected areas.
